In September, students are working hard to achieve their first 9 weeks standards for music. Kindergarten has begun the year learning about steady beat how to use our singing voice in music class! We have “traveled” to the farm and brought several animals back to our classroom to help us achieve our singing and playing goals! First grade is also working on our singing and steady beat playing skills. First grade will use many classroom instruments to ensure many chances and experiences for playing and singing with steady beat. 2nd and 3rd grade is working on their PTA performance of the program, Go Fish! These students have blown me away with their amazing singing, speaking, and overall performing skills! Wow! Keep up the amazing work; it is going to be a great performance! 4th grade will be working very hard this first and second 9 weeks as we prepare for our SLO (student learning objectives) test that will take place this January. Students will be assessed on their knowledge of form, notation, instrument technique and more. 5th grade is very excited to begin recorders. Mid-September we will begin working our way through the recorder karate program. This program allows students to work at their own pace as they progress through the program. For each new song a student masters, they will receive a karate “belt” for their recorder! I can’t wait! In addition, 5th grade students will also be using haikus to create sound scapes, and even writing their own haiku to create an orff instrument accompaniment too! What an exciting month for music!
August...
This month in music we will be getting starting learning our rituals and routines for music class! Right away, Kindergarten will begin learning what a singing voice is, how to demonstrate steady beat, and practice musical roll call everyday! 1st and 2nd graders will also participate in musical roll call every day when they come to class! This is a great way to establish a comfortable and encouraging music class culture and get to know each other! 1st and 4th grade will be preparing for SLO (student learning objective) Tests that will take place in January. These students will be tested on the music standards we have been working on for the past two years. Finally, 5th grade students will review their knowledge of treble clef notation as we prepare to begin our fun recorder program, Recorder Karate!
It is going to be a truly fantastic year and I can't wait to begin!
